Crossbowman skill build

Where every skill point goes from your first Bowman level to 70, in a Budget build and a Pro build, and the numbers behind each choice. The skill numbers come from the Classic World client, not the old game.

1. The build at a glance
  1. Lv. 10-17: max Arrow Blow or Double ShotBudget maxes Arrow Blow: one arrow and the fewest MP a cast. Pro takes Arrow Blow 1 and maxes Double Shot: the same 240% on one monster, split between two when two are in range.
  2. Lv. 17-22: max Critical ShotMore critical hits on every arrow for the rest of the game, and Amazon's Judgement only works on critical hits.
  3. Lv. 22-30: The Eye of Amazon 3, then max FocusFrom level 30 most monsters dodge some arrows from a pure-DEX Bowman, and Focus fixes that. Your Bowman SP locks at 2nd job, so spend all of it before you advance.
  4. Lv. 30-37: max Crossbow Mastery, Crossbow Booster 1 at 32Mastery raises your lowest hit and Crossbow Mastery adds critical damage: about 53% more damage on average once it is maxed. One point of Crossbow Booster already gives its full attack speed.
  5. Lv. 37-47: Final Attack: Crossbow 1, then max Iron ArrowYour attack for crowds: one arrow through up to 6 monsters in a line, each one taking 80% of what the one before it took.
  6. Lv. 48-70: the builds splitBudget: Soul Arrow: Crossbow, so you stop buying arrows, then Amazon's Judgement, the rest of Crossbow Booster, and Final Attack: Crossbow last. Pro: Final Attack: Crossbow, Soul Arrow: Crossbow, the rest of Crossbow Booster, and Amazon's Judgement 1.

You get 1 SP per level as a Beginner, 1 SP at each job advancement, and 3 SP per level after that. Crossbowman SP can't be spent on Bowman skills, and an SP Reset Scroll from the Cash Shop resets every skill except Beginner skills.

2. Budget and Pro builds

Skill points cost nothing, so both builds follow the same route with one swap per job. What sets them apart is where your mesos go: arrows, gear, scrolls and potions. Prices are what each item sells for on HubCW, so they move with the market.

BudgetSpend as little as you can
Skills
Arrow Blow at 1st job, the cheapest attack per MP. At 2nd job Soul Arrow: Crossbow comes early, so you stop buying arrows, and Amazon's Judgement is maxed, so the monsters you crit reach you slower. Final Attack: Crossbow stops at 11.
Arrows
Arrows for Crossbows, the cheapest there are. Once you have Soul Arrow: Crossbow you don't use any.
Gear
A clean crossbow every 10 levels. Wear whatever else drops.
Scrolls
None. Sell the ones that drop to pay for potions.
Potions
Red Potion (2.5 HP a meso) while they keep up, then White Potion (2.0), and Blue Potion (1.0 MP a meso). MP costs about twice as much as HP, so spend MP carefully.
Hunting
Arrow Blow on lone monsters and Iron Arrow once 4 or more are in a line: from there it beats Arrow Blow per MP as well as per cast.
ProMoney is no object
Skills
Double Shot at 1st job, two arrows that split between two monsters. At 2nd job Final Attack: Crossbow is maxed straight after Iron Arrow; Soul Arrow: Crossbow comes after it and Amazon's Judgement keeps one point.
Arrows
Mithril Arrows for Crossbows (+3 W.ATT) from the start. Carpenters craft them for about 7.1 mesos an arrow in materials.
Gear
The best crossbow at every 5-level step and DEX gear in every slot. Buy it already scrolled: Price Check splits sales by stat roll.
Scrolls
Attack on the crossbow and gloves, DEX on the overall, cape and earrings. Every slot, see the table below.
Potions
Elixir and White Potion to refill, Warrior Potion (+10 Attack Power) running all the time for about 2,200 mesos an hour, and Sniper Potion on monsters that dodge.
Hunting
Crossbow Booster always on and Iron Arrow whenever 2 or more monsters line up. Every attack has a 25% chance to add Final Attack: Crossbow's 360% arrow.

Gear, slot by slot

Gloves
Whatever drops
Earrings
Whatever drops

Where two items share a step they are the same item for men and women: buy the cheaper. Arrows have no level, so theirs is the level the build moves up to them. Bowmen get no tops or bottoms past level 40, so from 50 an overall takes both slots. Any earrings do for Pro: they all have 5 slots, and the DEX scrolls are what count.

Arrows

An arrow adds its attack to your crossbow's on every shot. Carpenters craft every kind, so the last column is what one arrow costs in materials at market prices; it stands in where nobody sells them.

What Soul Arrow: Crossbow saves

Soul Arrow: Crossbow maxed costs 5 MP every 300 seconds: one Blue Potion keeps it up for about 3.3 hours. Without it, every 1,000 casts use the arrows below.

SkillArrows a castBudgetPro
Arrow Blow 1 1,000 mesos7,076 mesos
Double Shot 2 2,000 mesos14,152 mesos
Iron Arrow 1 1,000 mesos7,076 mesos
Final Attack: Crossbow 1 1,000 mesos7,076 mesos

Mesos per 1,000 casts, with Arrows for Crossbows for Budget and Mithril Arrows for Crossbows for Pro. Final Attack: Crossbow's row counts each time it fires. Soul Arrow: Crossbow only works with a crossbow: a Hunter has his own.

Pro scrolls

One tier in each family gives the most per slot on average without any risk to the item. Pro fills every slot with it, or buys gear where every slot already passed.

The other tiers, on a crossbow: Crossbow Attack Scroll: Lesser is 100% for +1, Crossbow Attack Scroll: Greater 10% for +4, and Crossbow Attack Scroll: Chaos 10% for +5, but 50% of its failures destroy the crossbow. Try them in the scroll simulator first.

What the money buys

Each build's average damage per cast on one monster, in its own gear and with its own skills at that level: Arrow Blow for Budget, Double Shot for Pro (both arrows on the one monster). Pure DEX, with only the STR that gear needs. Pro counts every scroll slot as passed and Warrior Potion running. Monster defense is left out, so treat the numbers as a comparison.

4. Bowman, Lv. 10-30

You advance in Henesys at level 10. From then to 30 you get 61 SP for six skills that would take 105 to max, and whatever you leave here at 30 stays that way. These are the same two plans as in the Hunter guide: nothing in them needs a bow or a crossbow.

LevelSkill pointsWhy
10 Arrow Blow 1 Advance to Bowman with Athena Pierce in Henesys. You get 1 SP now and 3 per level after that. Arrow Blow 1 unlocks Double Shot. Arrow Blow 1 is your first attack: one arrow at 160% for 6 MP.

30 Budget Double Shot 1 · The Eye of Amazon 4 · Power Knockback 1Pro The Eye of Amazon 4 · Focus 20 · Power Knockback 1 2nd job: choose Crossbowman. Spend your last Bowman SP first, because Crossbowman SP can't go into Bowman skills. Power Knockback 1 pushes up to 2 monsters away from you for 12 MP: a way out when they corner you.Budget: Double Shot fires 2 arrows of 80%: both hit a lone monster, or they split between 2.Pro: Focus maxed: +20 Accuracy and +25 avoid for 300 seconds, 16 MP.
Arrow Blow or Double Shot? Both do 240% a cast to one monster: Arrow Blow as one arrow for 14 MP, Double Shot as two arrows for 16 MP. With two monsters in range Double Shot splits its arrows, so it can kill two weak ones a cast. Budget saves the MP and arrows; Pro takes the second kill.
Why Focus 20?A pure-DEX Bowman misses some arrows on 15 of the 25 monsters from level 30 to 70. Focus maxed adds 20 accuracy for 300 seconds, and then you hit every one of them every time.
The last pointsBoth builds end with The Eye of Amazon 4 and Power Knockback 1, which pushes monsters off you when they corner you. Budget's last point is Double Shot 1, two arrows for 8 MP.
Beginner skillsThree Snails 3 first for an early ranged attack, then Recovery 3 and Nimble Feet 3. All three are maxed by level 10 whatever you do.
5. Crossbowman, Lv. 30-70

At 2nd job you get 1 SP, then 3 per level: 121 by level 70. Maxing all six Crossbowman skills would take 140, so 19 points stay short: Budget leaves them in Final Attack: Crossbow, Pro in Amazon's Judgement. The current client has no 3rd job yet.

Amazon's Judgement 1: a critical hit has a 60% chance to slow the monster by 15 for 3 seconds.
Why Crossbow Mastery first? It raises your lowest hit and adds critical damage on every arrow: about 53% more damage on average once it is maxed. Nothing else in the book comes close, so both builds max it by 37.
Why Final Attack: Crossbow 1 at 37?Level 1 already gives the 25% chance of one more arrow at 270%; the other 29 levels add 90% in all. On average its procs add about 38% of Arrow Blow's damage to each attack on a lone monster, before the time each proc takes.
Amazon's Judgement or Final Attack: Crossbow? The 19 points that can't be maxed go to one or the other. Budget maxes Amazon's Judgement: every critical hit, about 25% of your arrows, slows the monster by 35 for 5 seconds, so fewer of them reach you. Pro wants the damage and maxes Final Attack: Crossbow.
Soul Arrow: Crossbow early or late?Arrows are cheap, but you fire thousands of them; with Soul Arrow: Crossbow up you use none. Budget takes it as soon as Crossbow Booster 5 unlocks it. Pro pays for the arrows and kills faster with Final Attack: Crossbow first.

7. Damage math

An arrow's damage is your total weapon attack, the crossbow's and the arrow's added together, times a stat term: DEX times the weapon's multiplier, plus STR, plus Attack Power from potions. Each hit rolls between a minimum and a maximum, and mastery raises the minimum. The comparisons below use the community's damage formula with a level 50 Pro Crossbowman's stats; treat them as relative.

Slow (7)Crossbow, Battle Crossbow, Mountain Crossbow, Eagle Crow, Silver Crow, Rower, Golden Crow, Gross Jaeger+13.3% attacks

Other multipliers

  • Criticals: everyone starts at a 5% chance of +20%. Critical Shot and Crossbow Mastery maxed make it 25% for +55%, about 13% more damage on average.
  • Power Knockback: a hit with the crossbow itself, not an arrow; up close a crossbow swings or stabs, half the time each. The community formula gives a close-range hit a much smaller stat term, so even though it always crits it does about 26% of Arrow Blow's damage to each monster. Use it to push monsters away, not to kill them.
  • Weapon DEF: damage × 100 ÷ (DEF + 100). Most training monsters have 0-50 DEF; Iron Hogs have 500, a sixth of your damage.
  • Level gap: monsters above your level take less, ×0.89 at 5 levels above you and ×0.71 at 9.
8. Iron Arrow vs Arrow Blow

Iron Arrow fires one arrow through up to 6 monsters in a line: 180% to the first, and each one after takes 80% of what the one before took, down to 59% for the last. Arrow Blow hits one for 240%. Per cast Iron Arrow does more from 2 monsters in a line, but it costs 28 MP to Arrow Blow's 14, so per MP it only pulls ahead from 4. Double Shot never does more in all than Arrow Blow: it only splits the same 240% between two.

TipEach level of Iron Arrow adds damage, but its MP cost goes from 14 to 28 on the way, so damage per MP falls a little. Max it anyway: you buy kills, not MP. The arrow goes through every monster in its path, so the more of them stand in a row in front of you the better, and every Iron Arrow can set off Final Attack: Crossbow too.

9. Where to train

The monsters that give the most EXP per cast at every 5 levels. Each is up to 10 levels below you, has at least 10 on one map, and takes your attacks at least 95% of the time. Casts are how many attacks a kill takes on average after the monster's Weapon DEF, for each build in its own gear and skills, with whichever of its attacks below kills it fastest.

Ranked by EXP per cast for the Budget build. Monsters below your level are a little easier to hit than shown, and chance-based extras like Final Attack aren't counted. Spawn speed, map layout and other players change what an hour really gives, so try the top two and keep the one that feels faster. The Training Finder ranks the monsters for any level by EXP per HP.

10. Stats & crossbows

You get 5 AP per level. Keep STR at what your next crossbow or armor needs, whichever is more, and put everything else into DEX. DEX counts 2.5 times as much as STR in every arrow.

Crossbows need 10 less STR than the bow of their level, so a pure-DEX Crossbowman keeps about 10 more points in DEX than a Hunter. 7 of the 9 crossbows that have a bow of their level attack slower than it, and each of those has 2-3 more W.ATT to make up for it.

A crossbow adds attack like arrows do, and one with 7 scrolled slots adds up to +14 more.

11. Sources & notes
  • From the game data: skill numbers and prerequisites, monster levels and avoid, and item stats and requirements. They update when the game does.
  • From the client's skill data: Iron Arrow's level stats and level text agree, 180% to up to 6 monsters at max; its description says the damage drops with each monster the arrow passes through, but not by how much. Crossbow Mastery's critical damage is only in its level text.
  • From players: SP per level, the 2nd-job SP lock, and the damage, critical, accuracy and attack-speed formulas come from community testing (meowdb), and so does Iron Arrow's falloff: each monster after the first takes 80% of what the one before took. That both of Double Shot's arrows hit a lone monster, that Power Knockback counts as a close-range hit, and that Final Attack: Crossbow's procs add their damage on top of the attack are community findings; the game data doesn't confirm them.
  • Calculated: the attack comparison, the Crossbow Mastery curve, the Crossbow Booster speed-up, the Iron Arrow tables and the accuracy counts use those formulas with example stats. Misses, crits and positioning all move real results.
  • Budget and Pro builds: the gear picks are written by hand. Prices are the median HubCW sale of the last 30 days, or the median Free Market ask when nothing sold; a dash means neither. Crafted arrow costs are the recipe's materials at those prices. The damage figures assume 25 starting stat points, 5 AP a level, and STR at 4 or what the crossbow and armor need.
